Delhi Wakes Up to Hazardous Pollution Following Diwali
As Tuesday dawned citizens of the planet's dirtiest urban center were faced with breathing dangerously toxic air that fell into the "critical" range.
Extremely High Air Quality Levels
Various sections of Delhi registered an air quality index above 500, which translates to a tenfold increase over the recommended limit recommended by the WHO.
In some locations, readings of toxic particulate matter reached peaks of 1800, representing fifteen to twenty times higher than safe levels.
Firecracker Ban and New Developments
Beginning in 2020, authorities had implemented a complete ban on the distribution and bursting of firecrackers during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the hazardous smog that engulfs the capital as winter begins.
Yet earlier this year, the newly elected regional government petitioned the highest court to seek a easing of the restrictions.
They proposed allowing "green crackers" – which have been doubted by conservation groups as being only about 30% reduced emissions – as a middle ground between "tradition and public health".
Court Decision and Enforcement
Much to the frustration of public health and environmental campaigners, judges complied with the appeal, stipulating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be set off during specific time windows throughout the celebrations.
On Monday night, there was extensive flouting of the time restrictions across the city, with little regulation regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the supposedly greener variety.
Many recording stations throughout the city recorded contamination spiking around the night hours to some of the worst levels recorded during Diwali in at least recent memory.
Cross-Border Effects
The widespread use of fireworks during Diwali also initiated a controversy with adjacent Pakistan, with officials in Pakistan's Punjab partially attributing declining atmospheric conditions in Lahore on contaminants originating in neighboring India following the events.
Chronic Pollution Crisis
The dangerously high levels of air contamination in Delhi have remained as a major challenge for more than 15 years, with the condition continuing to worsen.
Near the festival period, the amount of toxic particulate matter in the air has been documented to shoot up to 70% higher the most severe readings ever measured in China's capital, which was once considered as the globally most contaminated urban center.
Diverse Contamination Sources
The problem in Delhi is caused by a convergence of various sources including heavy vehicle emissions, construction debris, development work, rubbish burning and haze from crop residue ignition in nearby regions of farming communities.
Throughout these areas, rural residents regularly burn crop residue to clear them quickly, producing hazardous haze that becomes contained over the city as colder air arrives.
Public Health and Financial Consequences
Both financial and medical impact on the roughly thirty-three million residents living in the capital region is substantial, according to multiple investigations.
These hazardous conditions causes high levels of neurological, cardiovascular and lung diseases, and can result in malignancies.
The pollution is calculated to be responsible for ten thousand untimely deaths per year in Delhi.
