Citizens have gathered throughout the country to remember two years since the Hamas-conducted offensive on October 7th, 2023, as discussions proceeded in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.

The assault led to more than 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others taken back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the uniquely deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust.

Israel reacted by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, according to the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as reliable by the UN and other world agencies.

"The violent enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," the leader stated on that day.

He also pledged to "accomplish all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the removal of the Hamas administration and the guarantee that Gaza will not present a threat to Israel".

Remembrance Gatherings Across Israel

The national leadership rescheduled official remembrance events until October 16th - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still took place around the country on that day.

A memorial ceremony for the relatives of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas assault was organized in Tel Aviv. Put together by the affected families, it was aired across Israeli TV networks.

Some time earlier, a moment of silence was respected throughout the country.

Peace Discussions in Egypt

Simultaneously, both sides' negotiating teams met in the North African Red Sea resort of the negotiation venue for a second day of mediated discussions to examine the terms of the agreement.

A high-ranking delegate involved in the discussions said that an evening round of negotiations started at 19:00 Cairo time.

The source stated the day's discussions concluded without tangible results, because of disagreements over the proposed Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over assurances Hamas seeks to make certain Israel does not resume fighting after the initial stage of the deal.

He commented that the discussions are "difficult and have still not achieve any major advancement," but mentioned that intermediaries are making efforts to narrow the gaps between the conflicting groups.

Essential Matters in Talks

  • An enduring truce
  • The exchange of the prisoners still held by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of military personnel from Gaza
  • Arrangements for relief supplies provision
  • Post-war management of the territory

Public Reaction

In the city's Hostages Square that day, young a woman - whose family member survived the attack on the gathering, where many attendees were lost their lives and many more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - explained: "No location appears as home anymore and until every captive are released not a single person will have peace of mind."

"When we see everyone home returned, we can breathe once more. Then we can begin to rebuild," she concluded.

Near Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in the capital, people gathered to demonstrate their solidarity for the families of the abducted. Israel says nearly fifty stay in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be surviving.

Demonstrator a participant remarked: "We need do every compromise required for the abducted to return. But we sincerely need assurances that we will be protected."

Opinion polls now regularly indicate that approximately the majority of Israelis want the war to finish in exchange for the liberation of the captives.

Gaza Conditions

At the location of the gathering, grieving people assembled to remember the victims.

From there, the boom of Israeli air strikes and explosions could be detected just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses said the severe Israeli shelling continued.

In the main city, air and artillery strikes were noted in the dawn of that day in the western Tal al-Hawa, area and Nasr districts and in the east side area of the community, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.

"When the dusk falls, the anxiety appears with it," evacuated urban resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack last year, described.

"My family are terrified of the attacks. During nighttime we are resting together, embracing, notably my smallest child who rests his head on me all night."

"Every second we monitor the news to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be achieved and that the war will come back to us."

Health Emergency

Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area said it had accepted the bodies of several people by the midday, including several killed in an Israeli strike in the southern district.

A different healthcare center in the southern urban center of Khan Younis indicated two more fatalities had been delivered. One of them was died by Israeli forces while seeking assistance to the southern area, health workers reported.
