Boxing is in a notable downturn this period, with a scarcity of big events and far less compelling bouts than usual. The prospect of a important and captivating heavyweight contest between Parker and Wardley at the O₂ Arena brings a measure of relief to the challenged industry. The last man standing will with high probability face the world champion Usyk next season. In stark contrast, the unsuccessful boxer is probably going to mourn the unavoidable deterioration of their gained recognition.

Parker is on a winning run since his last defeat to opponent Joe Joyce three years in the past. The low-key appeal of the two boxers is strengthened by the fact that they now are on the cusp of a championship opportunity. Yet both are vulnerable. This is the 40th contest for Parker and, apart from three losses, he has been knocked down on several occasions by different opponents. He invariably recovers but Wardley possesses more power than anyone he has faced – with the omission of Wilder who seemed a shadow of a power puncher when Parker secured a one-sided points victory in December 2023.

Wardley, previously a white-collar fighter, who only began his boxing career when he was 20, had no amateur experience and has consistently faced questions regarding his technical limitations. But he is also on the verge to a shot at the title.

“This is the most significant fight, at the moment, in the heavyweight class. Both these fighters have accepted the challenge when neither one needed to make this fight. Parker is the interim champion and they have formally instructed Usyk to fight him, but the Ukrainian was hurt. Joseph wants to fight anyway.

“Fabio is also in a fantastic position and he merely needed to be patient for his chance. He said ‘No.’ He wanted to fight – and versus Parker because it provides him a shot to skip the line.”

Parker's Viewpoint

Parker, set to be 34 in January, said: “It's win or go home. I am not thinking about losing. I honor my adversary and his achievements and how he has prepared for this contest. But I am on a different level and I am going to show it on Saturday.”

Wardley’s Outlook

Wardley will be 31 in December, and he said: “It's a huge evening for the pair of us. It is obviously the biggest fight of my boxing journey and the most important fight ever. But whenever I face a tougher opponent I elevate my performance. The upcoming fight will be no exception. The divide between Parker's status and what others believe about me has been a common theme during my entire career.

“He has been going around the block for a long time, with a many bouts on his record. By no means is he an aged fighter but he has been in the sport for a significant time and had several tough bouts. I've also endured brutal fights and I know they put miles on the clock. He has been in a far greater number of those compared to me.”

The Final Verdict

But the suspicion remains that Parker should prove too veteran, and too skilful, for his opponent. He should win a bruising battle with the confidence that he is the prime candidate for Usyk – currently the top heavyweight globally by a significant margin.
