Taliban Utilized Discarded British Gear to Locate Afghans Who Worked With Allied Forces, Inquiry Is Told

An informant has revealed an official investigation that the UK left behind confidential equipment allowing the Taliban to identify local individuals who collaborated with western forces.

Information Leak Puts Numerous in Danger

The source, identified as Person A, stated that individuals impacted by the information breach were advised to change residences and switch their mobile numbers to ensure their safety from militant forces.

Members of Parliament are looking into the UK government's management of a serious disclosure of personal details concerning almost nineteen thousand individuals who had asked to come to the United Kingdom to flee the Taliban.

How the Leak Was Discovered

An electronic document containing their personal data, comprising names, contact details and in some cases family information, was mistakenly released by a worker employed at special operations center in early 2022.

The breach became known only in August 2023, when identities of several individuals who had requested to move to Britain were posted on online platforms.

Regime's Resources

Many believe there's a false assumption that Afghan rulers are without comparable resources that we have,” the whistleblower testified to MPs.

“We left it all behind in Afghanistan; they have it. If they have a contact number, they can trace your exact position. This is exactly how intelligence groups did.”

When questioned about whether the Taliban possessed necessary encryption, the source declared: “They possess all resources.”

Consequences of the Data Breach

Preliminary research submitted to the inquiry indicated that no fewer than forty-nine relatives and colleagues of individuals impacted by the leak had been killed.

A superinjunction regarding the leak was implemented in August 2023 and blocked relevant facts concerning it from public disclosure until mid-2025.

Security Recommendations

Due to legal constraints, the source and the aid group associated with advised individuals at risk they were assisting that they had “apprehensions that certain devices had been compromised”.

“Our suggestion was that they relocate where feasible and switched their mobile numbers. These represented the two main details that, if the Taliban had access to these details, would lead to identification and capture,” Person A explained.

Contested Findings

The source argued that an official review carried out by a retired civil servant had been incorrect to state that the obtaining of the records by the Taliban was “unlikely to substantially change current risk levels”.

“The thing to remember is that these Afghans are not standing up to militant forces; they remain concealed. All concerns relate to their previous employment.”

She detailed disturbing treatment suffered by concerned people, involving electrocution, interrogation techniques, and physical abuse.

“Instances include toddlers who have had limbs fractured to try to get relatives to reveal locations,” the whistleblower revealed.
