The Legendary Jimmy Cliff, Reggae Superstar and Cultural Figure, Passes Away at 81 Years of Age

The world mourns the loss of Jimmy Cliff, the celebrated Jamaican-born reggae singer and actor whose distinctive vocal talent played a key role in popularizing reggae music worldwide. The artist passed away at the age of eighty-one.

“With deep sorrow that I announce that my beloved husband, Jimmy Cliff, has crossed over due to a seizure episode followed by pneumonia,” posted his wife Latifa on social media. “I am thankful for his loved ones, friends, fellow artists and coworkers who shared his journey. To all his fans globally, please know that your support was his strength during his whole career … Jimmy, my darling, may you rest in peace. I will honor your wishes.” The message was co-signed by their offspring, Lilty and Aken.

Jimmy Cliff was beloved for hits including You Can Get It If You Really Want, I Can See Clearly Now and Wonderful World, Beautiful People. His optimistic sound and positive temperament earned him a large and longstanding following.

Beyond his musical achievements, Cliff took the lead role in the 1972’s drama film The Harder They Come, a role that received critical praise and is considered a landmark of film in Jamaica.

Jimmy Cliff was among the select few of artists, alongside Bob Marley and others, to be honored with the esteemed Order of Merit from Jamaica.
