The Red Devils Poised to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
Manchester United are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Acquisition for United
The forward, with six months remaining on her deal, has been a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. This signing will be seen as a marquee signing for the Women’s Super League team.
Departure from Bayern has been anticipated after she was seen fighting back tears while thanking the German club’s fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in late December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top strikers. Per multiple sources, all the paperwork for the transfer have now been completed.
Reliable Goal Threat to Strengthen the Attack
The experienced striker's arrival is expected to provide a significant uplift to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been highly consistent in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, including the last term, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Carrington
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United appear to be gathering momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes feature qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has brought additional activity:
- The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since joining in 2023.
On the midfielder's new deal, a club official stated: “She has become a vital part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
