The Reform UK leader Claims Teachers of ‘Indoctrinating Children’ on Race Issues
Nigel Farage has asserted that educators would initiate walkouts shortly after a Reform UK election victory, charging that they are “poisoning our kids” by instructing students that black pupils are victims and white children oppressors.
During an event for a Michigan-based religious institution, Farage outlined his viewpoint on British schools, stating that the “Marxist left” had “taken over schooling”.
“I expect a teachers’ strike very quickly after securing a victory,” Farage commented during a Q&A session.
“They are corrupting young minds. They instruct children to be ashamed of their country. They inform little Johnny, who’s eight, who is black that he is a victim and a white child of the same age that he is an oppressor. They are dividing us, instead of fostering unity. They promote this harmful mindset.”
Reacting to Farage’s claims, the head of a major education union dismissed the idea that the education system was controlled by Marxists as “absurd”. Kebede noted that any strikes must relate to teachers’ terms and conditions, and doubted whether Reform would attack these right after taking office.
“Farage has built his public life on dog-whistle politics and currently, similar to other figures, he is targeting educators and their organizations for a fight,” Kebede stated.
“This is highly reckless. I don’t – and nor does my union – push critical race theory as he claims … Should he become prime minister he would sell out our public services, particularly schooling … and the outcome would be catastrophic for students and learning.”
Reform, which is leading the polls by about 10 points, has not set out much detail on a proposed education policy and seems not to have appointed an education spokesperson.
However, his comments indicated the group would reform the educational framework. He said: “We face an enormous task with education – absolutely herculean. Moreover, it won’t happen quickly; it requires years, a long-term effort to reform.”
Farage expressed that younger generations are receptive to analytical thought, but older youth were “completely lost”.
Honoring a conservative activist, Farage said: “My goal for schooling is to teach critical thinking – to instruct people that multiple perspectives exist and you make up your own mind as opposed to what’s happening now where views are labeled good or bad. This is a huge undertaking in the UK and US.”
Reform has previously clashed with a major educators’ organization, after Kebede called the party “far right and racist” and dismissed Farage as “a poundshop Donald Trump”.
Farage has accused Kebede of being “an avowed radical” … someone who is absolutely determined that young minds be corrupted through education, their thinking tainted about everything to do with this country” and maintained that the union is trying to indoctrinate youth opposed to his party.
Almost one million people are employed in education in the UK, about half of whom are teachers and the remainder being assistants and administrative personnel. The leading teachers’ organization has hundreds of thousands of members.
National strikes over educators’ salaries and work environment in recent years led to significant interruptions in educational institutions and extensive missed instruction for children.
At the US event, the Reform leader also vowed to promote the online educational material of the institution in the UK. He stated such groups were “key to resistance”, noting: “I am serious. I will help attract vast numbers of youth to these educational programs. I pledge this now and I’ll do that.”
The college, a religious educational establishment, provides complimentary classes. Its website states: “A scientific, literary, theological, political, and moral education is vital for well-being and to maintain the benefits of freedom. The college furnishes these beautiful courses for no charge to all who wish to learn.”
