The Young Spinner Makes Unexpected Selection in England's Ashes Team
England have opted for a twelve-player squad just two days before the opening Test match, with the 22-year-old spinner earning a surprise spot.
Bashir's inclusion suggests that the tourists will wait until the morning of the initial match to determine whether the venue conditions suit a pace-heavy attack or the addition of a spinner.
Both pace bowlers are included in the 12-man group, indicating there are no doubts about their pace bowler’s fitness.
The other seamers complete the bowling group, with the latter expected to miss out if Bashir makes the starting XI.
Ground Conditions Lean Toward Pace Bowlers
The England coach had been expected to choose an pace-only lineup on a ground that has staged several past matches.
In those matches, the majority of dismissals have been taken by seamers, with only a small number to spin bowling.
Among these 40 wickets, the veteran spinner has claimed 29, while overseas slow bowlers together have just a handful.
On a ground known for its speed and carry, and whose curator, Isaac McDonald, pledged that these traits are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a side loaded with fast bowlers is still the more likely choice.
Spin Options Weighed
There had been speculation that Will Jacks could be brought into the side to provide some spin while additionally strengthening the batting lineup.
However the coach has opted to stick with the young spinner, having stated previously that he would be his first-choice spinner for the Ashes.
Earlier, Lyon commented on Bashir as “OK,” saying that “in my eyes, the experienced spinner is still the English best spinner.”
“It is a huge responsibility, and it can be a significant test for bowlers who haven’t done it in the past in these conditions,” Lyon remarked of spin bowling in Australian Tests.
“I’m not going to let my secrets out so opponents come out and excel out here.”
