This Dominik Diamond Personal Gaming of the Year Roundup for The Past Year
So, how was 2025 in your home? Could it be described as truly wonderful as you pretended on online? Full of academic success for the children and riotous costume celebrations for the parents? Or was it a swamp of frustration with only occasional entertaining moments? Is any of this authentic, or is everyone now seven-fingered synthetic personas with unrealistic dental work?
I have gathered my thoughts for a chat, ready or not, to discuss the paramount thing in a calendar year: which releases we were obsessed with the most. So here goes:
Release Eldest Daughter Played the Most
Pikmin
"Is it impossible to pick just one?"
"This isn't my personal ranking."
On her phone, her go-to has been Cityscapes and "searching for decent healthcare."
"Digitally?"
"In reality."
Title Second Son Played the Most
Overwatch
"I don’t play games on my phone." He seemed insulted that the question was posed. I respect that.
Title Third Daughter Played the Most
Resident Evil Biohazard
She is trying to get into theatre school, but when she stepped away from the mic, she was playing Resident Evil. She also elaborated in great detail about her successes on The Sims, where the Shark has a thriving utopia with significantly better healthcare than her older sibling has outside the game.
Game the Wife Played the Most
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She started the year at sixty percent completion and finished the year at eighty-two percent. It’s a marathon not a sprint for her. On her phone: something called Woodle, where you have to remove pins.
Game I Teased My Kids About My Kids for Still Playing
Minecraft
Every time I see my adult son playing Minecraft, I rib him like a cross between a persistent critic. When he complains, I reply that I am doing this to prepare him so he can mature and play games for mature audiences. It’s a very Scottish father/son relationship.
Most Skilled Gaming Family Member 2025
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
It wasn't even close for this one. She is incredible. Even better than I was at Dancing Stage MegaMix in my prime.
Title I Played the Most
Marvel Snap
Nothing came close to the hours I spent on this insanely well-crafted card game digital pastime, with its regularly updated range of cards and game variations.
Title I Wish I Had Played Less
Marvel Snap
The downside about games that frequently update their range is you eventually realize and understand it is all just an attempt to trap you with fomo-fuelled microtransactions. So affection became resentment halfway through the year and it was deleted.
Title I Wish I Had Played More
Doom: The Dark Ages
Excellent reinvention of a iconic franchise. Immersive atmosphere from the beginning. I wish I could deal with my problems so effectively in real life.
Game I Wish I Had Played More (Thoughtful Edition)
Blue Prince
I refuse to rush this stunning, original game and I just was short on the mental bandwidth to give it what it required earlier this year. With relatives staying over the festive period, I will be playing this in the wee small hours after appropriate hospitality.
Title That Kept Me Sane When I Needed It
Balatro
I'm aware Balatro was last year's breakout game, but I was a late adopter. And it is exceptional. It just gets every single thing right. Crazy Poker is a fantastic concept, but the effects behind the different joker cards are so inventive it has become a game I literally would play at any hour. Combine that with the wittiness of the card design, and this is an definite pinnacle of gaming. I fantasize about being stuck in a small space for hours just so I have nothing to do but play it.
Title I Got the Most Backlash For Criticising
Outer Worlds 2
I received a wave of criticism when I mentioned how a glitch in another game damaged the experience for me, but that other title is still a massive gaming achievement in terms of overall polish – which I recognized even more after slogging through Outer Worlds 2. So my appreciation goes out to the commenter who took the time to write in to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "bitter, confused resentment". I present that in the exact way, because I acknowledge the engagement, and he is obviously an sharp judge of character.
Game Everybody Loved That I Just Didn’t Get
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Alright. Give me a bastard-hard non-linear thing and leave me without guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "figure it out". How delightful. I acknowledge that it looks ace and is perfection if you are into challenging games, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I desire less in my mid-fifties. I was around back when most games were like this, and my patience is gone. It was okay when I was a kid, but so was many outdated things.
Biggest Gaming News of 2025
Debate between corporate partnerships that sparked debate, and high launch costs. Both morally indefensible and unpleasant.
Games I Would Name My Children After, If I Was Ever Foolish Enough to Have More
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all be unique names shouted from the garden at dinner time.
Part of My Body That Aches Most From Gaming
Right Thumb Joint. Honestly. I don’t know if it’s because of button mashing or endless scrolling, but it is sore like the mines of sulphur in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs looked after back in the day.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2026
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to make 2026 last until the heat death of the universe.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2036
The Witcher 4.
