Thrice-crowned National Basketball Association Most Valuable Player Jokic endured a "heartbreaking" knee injury as the Denver Nuggets were defeated 147-123 against the Miami Heat.

The star player injured himself in the latter stages of the opening half during an unintentional collision with teammate Jones.

The other player stepped on the footwear of Jokic, and he promptly collapsed to the court grabbing his knee.

The 30-year-old, that leads the NBA this season in boards and dimes, posted a score of 21 points and eight dimes in the contest prior to incurring the setback.

He will undergo an MRI scan on Tuesday to determine the seriousness of the issue.

"Immediately, Jokic realized he was hurt," commented Denver coach David Adelman.

"Injuries are part of the game. Any player that gets hurt, it's gut-wrenching, especially a player as talented as him. We will know more tomorrow."

"The team will adjust as a team. Obviously, right now, I'm focused about him as a person and the disappointment of going through something of that nature."
