US Military Executes Deadly Attack in Eastern Pacific, Resulting in Four Deaths
According to a senior defense spokesperson, the US armed forces executed a lethal kinetic engagement on a vessel in the Pacific Ocean, resulting in the deaths of four people.
“A US joint task force carried out a deadly attack on a vessel linked to a terrorist group in open sea. Surveillance confirmed the vessel was transiting along a established narco-trafficking route and was engaged in narco-trafficking operations. A total of four male drug traffickers were eliminated, and no American forces were injured.”
Background and Recent Strikes
This announcement follows a day after an announcement regarding a blockade of all targeted oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. That statement on online platforms, the American leader alleged Venezuela of using oil revenues to fund drug trafficking and other crimes, pledging to escalate the military presence.
Just on the previous day, the Pentagon said it had conducted strikes on three boats it accused of trafficking drugs in the Pacific, killing eight people. Beginning on 2 September, over 20 strikes have resulted in the deaths of at least 99 people, most off the coast of Venezuela.
Administration Justifies Tactics Amid Scrutiny
The administration has encountered increasing pressure to make public video of a September 2nd vessel attack. But, officials have refused to do so. The administration has defended its campaign as a successful operation, arguing it has stopped drugs from entering US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is stretching the limits of lawful warfare.
Although the administration has said the campaign is about halting drugs headed to the US, comments from a top official seemed to suggest a broader political aim. In a recent interview, the chief of staff remarked the president “wants to keep on blowing boats up until Venezuela's president surrenders or concedes.”
This suggests the military campaign may be linked to a push to oust Venezuela's current leadership.
